Arctic Design Week
18–23 March 2019
Since 2009, the city of Rovaniemi, together with Rovaniemi Regional Development Ltd. and the Faculty of Art and Design at Lapland University, has been inviting visitors to Arctic Design Week. For seven days, experts from the fields of business and design will be asked to discuss and answer current questions in the field of design.
Arctic Design Week, presents itself as the world’s northernmost design festival. This year’s theme is “Design for Happiness”. Under this banner, the festival will bring together around 150 designers and artists presenting design from the Arctic region and showcasing the role design plays in life here. According to the organisers, Arctic Design is extreme, resilient and sustainable. Twenty events are planned throughout the week including lectures on design, workshops, exhibitions and pop-up stores. The topics covered by the programme range from an explanation of typographic printing processes to independent carpet weaving to factors of happiness, especially with regard to entrepreneurial activities. The highlight of the festival is the Arctic Design Conference, where lectures and performances put the theme of happiness from different perspectives into a more or less design-specific context.
