Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort, Hua Hin
5 – 7 Oktober 2018
The Bangkok International Typography Symposium (BITS) is an annual conference on modern typography for education and advertising. It is the “first and only typography and design conference in South East Asia”.
This year, for the first time, BITS will take place outside of Bangkok, in Hua Hin, under the banner “On the Beach”. This motto is not only anchored in the programme which this year is intended to be both informative and above all designed for fun, but also in the expected attire for the weekend: visitors may attend the conference, which will largely take place on the beach, in shorts and swimwear. While the podium discussions, talks, workshops, and lectures will include professional and high-level content, they will take place in a casual, informal atmosphere. International speakers include for example, David Berlow, founder of Font Bureau, Frank Grießhammer from the Goethe-Institut, Keitaro Sakamoto from Morisawa and Lisa Schultz from Schriftlabor.
The speakers use typography in different ways and often cover interesting crossovers between typography, design, technology, and economics. The conference aims to show how Thai typography is developing at the moment, as well as looking at international trends and issues. How do typeface design and politics fit together? Does our increasingly complex world need simple typography? The workshops are aimed at all typographers and offer the possibility of developing variable and coloured fonts, to gain insights into Korean fonts and the opportunity of talking to experienced type designers.
