The Gesellschaft für Designgeschichte [Society for Design History] (GfDg) was founded in 2008 with the aim of intensifying the discussion about the history of design and to interconnect historical research and practice. In collaboration with the HfG Offenbach, the society is organising the two-day event “Design Criticism”.

Technological change, social upheaval and global crises affect the world of design and demand new ideas. The main focus of the conference will be the tension between the expanded field of design and the complex media landscape, taking into consideration economic and political upheavals. The starting point is the current crisis in the media and the political and cultural institutions associated with them. The conference will also focus on the question of whether critical journalism is losing importance as a result of private interest politics and the so-called “new media” of social networks or online newspapers. Discussions will also encompass the extent to which design journalism and design criticism reflect and communicate this altered, extended and sometimes contradictory concept of design. Stephan Ott, chief editor of form, is among this year‘s speakers.
