It’s a Book, it’s a Role That You Take, it’s a Game Being Played.

23 March 2019
For ten years now, alongside the Book Fair, the independent publishing fair “It’s a Book” has been taking place in the Lichthof of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB), now enjoying its sixth year as part of a project seminar organised by HGB students. The event, enriched in recent years by a symposium with an increasingly institutional character, is this time going immersive and interactive with the help of media platforms from broadcasting and radio plays.
The event website asks you to “Bring your Headphones”, highlighting this year’s concept of the independent fair. Breaking up the otherwise rather linear lecture format, allows the illustration and exploration of alternative organisational possibilities for the “It’s a Book” trade fair. It means that the organisers involved are no longer exclusively responsible for the concept, but act as producers instead. Interactive and individually controllable audio walks make it possible to disengage from a fixed, timed schedule and can therefore respond flexibly to visitor requirements. Parts of the audio walk will be broadcast simultaneously on the independent Leipzig radio station Radio Blau. Thematically speaking, the event is about language and communication in (independent) publishing. The aim is to examine the relationship between written text and spoken language. While the printed word forms a postulate that is no longer negotiable, the spoken word is fleeting.
In addition, the event looks at the relevance of books, their aesthetics and forms of expression. To what extent is participation in the interaction between sender and receiver a given or negotiable?
Another main component of the event is the presentation of independent and student publishing projects.
