Light Air Sun.The New Frankfurt

Under Ernst May as head of the Municipal Planning and Building Control Office and Martin Elsaesser as head of the Frankfurt Building Department, between 1925 and 1930 Frankfurt became a stronghold of the International Style. The exhibition “Light Air Sun: The New Frankfurt” shows this new type of construction from the perspective of Matthias Matzak.
Back in 2008 the photographer Matthias Matzak captured this phenomenon on camera. In doing so, his aim was not to create a drily factual record of architecture from that time; rather, he wanted to shift the spotlight onto social housing construction. In his own words, he wanted “to show the personality of a building in [his] pictures, not just its shell.”
