East Berlin. Half a Capital

Museum Ephraim-Palais, Berlin (DE)

–9 Nov 2019

The Stadtmuseum Berlin is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with an exhibition at the Museum Ephraim-Palais on the history and culture of East Berlin, which were influenced to a large extent by design and architecture, such as the buildings on Karl-Marx-Allee, the Television Tower, the World Clock and the Centrum Warenhaus. East Berlin was a centre of consumerism and a showcase for socialism. With models, city maps, photographs, and films, the exhibition illustrates the urban and political life of East Berlin and the way it felt to live in a WBS 70 prefabricated building, furnished with a model 53693 armchair from the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. Alongside these are the Boxer, Wisent, Shanty styles of denims and the only skateboard ever marketed in the GDR by Germina. An accompanying volume of essays with contributions by renowned authors such as Götz Aly, Marion Brasch and Lilli Berlin has been published by Ch. Links Verlag.
