Company: Aamu Song & Johan Olin
Design Museum, Helsinki
5 April – 22 September 2019
Aamu Song and Johan Olin are artists and designers – but they first and foremost call themselves detectives – and together they form the Company design studio. The two founded the business in 2000. Seven years later, they started preparations for the Secrets series.
Secrets are projects that have been developed in close collaboration with local artisans, master craftspeople, workshops and manufacturers on several journeys around the world. The projects resemble a search for traditions and cultures along folkloristic paths. Starting in Finland, Aamu Song and Johan Olin have already carried out nine of these projects – in Korea, Russia, Japan and most recently Mexico, among others. Art objects, clothing, accessories and furniture were created in collaboration with local master craftspeople.
With their work, the designers want to draw attention to the endangered occupational image of craftsmanship and to the unsustainable nature of today’s consumer culture and open up alternatives to it. The exhibition presents the entire artistic process that the pair undertakes. Starting from the beginning of the journey, through the first meetings with master craftspeople, correspondence and production to the finished work.
A Midsummer Pre-party will be held on 12 June to celebrate Helsinki Day and finnish traditional craftsmanship with local artisans. The main attraction of the day is the Midsummer pole, which can be decorated with flowers by all visitors. This festival is only part of the Secret Universe event series, which continues in August with the Russian Holy Day, and in September with the Mexican Holy Day. You can find more information here.
