Design Students from Berlin and Copenhagen Invite you to Dinner

Kunstgewerbemuseum im Schloss Pillnitz, Dresden

–3 November 2019

Baroque-era tables were oftendecorated with groups of figures or porcelain landscapes to stimulate conversation. The term “conversation piece” entered art history in the 18th century as the term for portraits of small groups. At the invitation of the Kunstgewerbemuseum (museum of decorative arts), 22 design students created objects made of porcelain, ceramics and glass that interpret the Baroque tradition with a modern twist. The project is jointly managed by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin. Under the direction of Barbara Schmidt, Professor of Experimental Design in Berlin, and Martin Kaldahl from the Institute of Architecture and Design at the Royal Danish Academy, the students learned how to make porcelain at the Meissen factory and experimented with glass at the Harzkristall factory in Derenburg. The resulting material experiments and installations can be seen as still lifes in Schloss Pillnitz.
