All About Tel Aviv-Jaffa.

The Invention of a City

Jüdisches Museum Hohenems (AT)

–6 Oct 2019

Tel Aviv with its “White City” radiantly transcends the national, religious and violent conflicts of Israel and Palestine. This cosmopolitan city attracts tourists and start up companies and, with its legacy of Bauhaus architecture of over 4,000 buildings, has held the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. In this exhibition, the Jewish Museum Hohenems wants to look behind the well-kept facade of the city, which has been built by conscious branding since at least the 1970s. With photographs by Peter Loewy (born in Tel Aviv), historical material, objects and models, the exhibition reveals its hidden history as a city built by refugees and immigrants, whose success story has pushed the coexistence of Jews, Muslims and Christians in the former Jaffa to the back of people’s memories.
