Constructing Text. Swiss Architecture under Discussion
Swiss Architecture Museum, Basel
– 22 February 2015
The exhibition “Textbau” [Constructing Text] looks at the role of text within architecture and gives insights into how the architectural debate is influenced by different media. In order to achieve this, the exhibition is showcasing 15 selected documents such as buildings, projects and letters from the past 40 years which have all contributed to controversy within debates.
Because of their work, architects are usually more influenced visually, and image media plays an important role. In contrast therefore, the exhibition is concerned with the role of text within architecture. Text can take on very different roles and functions such as conveying information when image material is not appropriate or sufficient. Information can be drawn from daily newspapers or reports or serve to locate and allocate architectural items in journals and books. In addition, text is often used as an abstract instrument in reflecting on one’s own work. Against this backdrop, the exhibition shows very different forms and formats of text such as descriptions, analyses, essays, polemics and reviews. These specific examples are intended to demonstrate possibilities and ways as to how text can help with speaking and writing about architecture.
