The Millionaires Club
Conne Island, Leipzig
22–24 March 2019
The comics and graphics festival known as The Millionaires Club is taking place at Conne Island in Leipzig at the same time as the Leipzig Book Fair. The festival gives independent artists from all over the world the opportunity to present their work. Initiated in 2013 by a group of students from the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, The Millionaires Club has always offered a platform for comic artists who do not really identify with the Leipzig Book Fair.
More than 30 artists and collectives who will show and offer for sale small editions and self-published comics, zines, graphics or posters are represented this year. Lectures accompanying the event are intended to stimulate an exchange between the artists of the scene.
The festival kicks off on Friday 22 March at 7 pm, and the fair itself will open at 2 pm the following day. On Saturday at 5 pm, Georgy Elaev from Space Cow Press, and the founder of the festival Comic Arts Tyumen, will talk about developments in Russian comics. The comic-strip artist and bicycle mechanic Daria Bogdanska from Malmö follows with a reading from “Von Unten” (From Below), the title of her first graphic novel published by Avant-Verlag. It is an autobiographical narrative about personal and political struggles. Further lectures and readings as well as workshops, tombola, tin can shooting, live tattooing and screen-printing complete the lively programme.
