Wearing sustainability: The opportunities of eco-friendly fashion
From an eco-logical and social point of view, the fashion industry is one of the most harmful industries in the world. The “use-less” exhibition, under the prominent patronage of Vivienne Westwood, displays sustainable designs by students on the Fashion Design course at Hanover University of Applied Sciencesand Arts. These designs take account of the urgent need for change within the industry. Based on the presented projects’ approaches to zero waste and visible mending, the exhibition illustrates the textile process from raw material to recycling and invites visitors to participate by means of an interactive design. At the knitting station they learn how wool is processed, and in the Changing Room they can try out with fashion on their own bodies.
Workshops, guided tours and readings are intended to give impetus for questioning one’s own consumption of fashion, which, according to Greenpeace, has doubled in Germany since 2000. The future of the industry will be discussed during two roundtables in October.
