Spark.Icelandic Design in Berlin

Spark Design Space is a design gallery in Reykjavík that acts as a platform for local initiatives and seeks to promote Icelandic design. In collaboration with the Embassy of Iceland and the Iceland Design Center, Spark has now come to Berlin to exhibit four projects that offer an insight into the work of designers from Iceland and their sources of inspiration.

Designers and engineers are invited to take part in an international workshop in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 30 March to 3 April 2015, focusing on new supportive design solutions for people with physical disabilities and dealing with the technology that is already available.

Since 2012 the Bundespreis Ecodesign has been awarded to products, services and concepts that are notable for their high standard of innovation, exemplary design quality and good environmental properties. Entries can be submitted from 2 February to 27 April for the 2015 prize.

Since its inception almost 120 years ago, the cinema has been a place of aspiration. The “Filmtheater” exhibition, which is running until 31 May 2015 at the Deutsches Filmmuseum in Frankfurt, is showing the photography of Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre in a standalone exhibition for the first time.

The libraries of long established graphic designers often contain a particular set of volumes, and if they are good at their craft, these four books are often well-thumbed. These are none other than the Lettera volumes, put together by Armin Haab, Alex Stocker and the graphic designer Walter Haettenschweiler, between 1954 and 1972.

The oeuvre of Tom Vack reads like a Who’s Who of the international design scene since the 1980s. He immortalised the furniture and objects designed by Philippe Starck, Michele De Lucchi, Ingo Maurer and Alessandro Mendini in his images, and as such created his very own visual language. The Pinakothek der Moderne is now exhibiting around 200 of the artist’s photographs.

Vkhutemas is often described as the Russian Bauhaus, and primarily refers to the legendary modern art school of the 1920s. The eponymous exhibition now reveals key works from Vkhutemas for the first time in Germany, with a particular emphasis on architecture. The exhibition incorporates about 250 sketches, drawings, paintings and models from teachers and students alike.
