Hamburg’s Arts and Crafts Fair is one of the longest-established events of its kind. It has run since 1887 and has thus promoted contemporary craftwork for over 130 years. The aim behind the foundation of the fair, to provide unequivocal support for craft and design that stands out against a background of inferior mass production and one-size-fits-all goods, has lost nothing of its resonance today.

When the Iron Curtain came down in August 1989, it signalled the end of a social, political, economic and cultural experiment in which architecture also played an important role. The “Neglected Architecture” exhibition, which can be seen until 7 December in Frankfurt, features interesting examples of contemporary architecture that emerged under the influence of communist ideology.
Three questions for:Uta Brandes, international Gender Design Network
Is there anyone who is not aware of products with gender-specific associations such as hammer drills, chain saws, handbags and prams? These clichés are not only embedded in the minds of users but also in the minds of designers, which in turn demonstrate specific colour stereotypes or the use of particular materials.
The international Gender Design Network (iGDN) is organising its first German-language conference on the theme of gender and design taking place on 21 November at the International School of Design in Cologne. Also, running until 7 December, there is an exhibition “The Great small” looking at products that gender aware and gender unaware to be held at the Polytechnic University in Hong Kong. We put three questions to Uta Brandes, the founder of iGDN.

Today’s fashion design industry is tackling complex questions, for example, whether people actually need a new wardrobe every six months, what the role of wearable technologies is (such as Google glasses) and whether fashion always has to focus on the latest ideals of beauty. “The Future of Fashion is Now” exhibition, which runs until 18 January at Boijmans Museum in Rotterdam, displays the work of over 50 designers who have proactively looked at the future of fashion and the questions associated with it.

Haunted Screens. German cinema in the 1920s

The “Haunted” exhibition is showing more than 150 works from German cinema from the 1920s and the expressionist era. Alongside film clips also manuscripts, posters and set models will be displayed. The exhibition is being held in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the west of the United States.

Now in its 39th year, the competition run by Aktion Plagiarius e.V is encouraging designers and companies to submit their original products, the putative copies and plagiarised ideas to nominate them for this anti-prize.
