Hair by Sam McKnight
Somerset House, London
– 12 March 2017
With his innovative hairstyle creations,Sam McKnight has played a significant role in shaping the fashion world of the past 40 years. Somerset House is now dedicating an exhibition to his hairstyles, bringing the often over-looked discipline practised by hairstylists under the spotlight.
The list of designers, photographers, models and celebrities with whom Sam McKnight has worked to date is a long one and unites the greats of the fashion and entertainment industries. In addition to make-up and the items of clothing themselves, of course, hairstyling is a leading consideration in presenting fashion, and an art in itself. Designers like Vivienne Westwood and Karl Lagerfeld (there is a special section dedicated to McKnight’s collaboration with each of them in the exhibition) have relied for decades on Sam McKnight’s expertise in hairstyling. The show is divided into thematic sections showcasing different aspects of his work. In the “Backstage” area, visitors are introduced to the world behind the scenes of fashion shows and photo shoots. While he worked on presenting various Spring/Summer 2017 collections, McKnight was shadowed specifically for the purpose of creating films for this segment.
Another area, “Transformation” is dedicated to this phenomenon using the four models, Karlie Kloss, Kate Moss, Tilda Swinton and Stella Tennant as examples. McKnight’s hair styling plays a significant part in creating versatile visual roles.
