The best independent animated short films of the past two decades will be screened in the Saasfee Pavillon on 26 and 27 January 2018. The project has been initiated as a collaboration between the Saasfee artists’ collective, Merlin Flügel and Marc Rühl, who are both members of the Gogo Tanda animation collective.

This is the first time that the Sweat and Tears film festival is taking place. Its aim is to reveal the independent animation world of the past twenty years as an artistic field of experimentation for young talent. Short films will be presented by barely known artists from the beginnings of animation alongside others by famous greats such as David O’Reilly, who produced the adventure time series “A Glitch Is a Glitch” as a guest animator, and Nicolas Menard, who won a SXSW film award in the Best Animated Short category in 2016 for his short film, “Wednesday with Goddard”. The various experimental forms of expression are intended to reflect developments in the genre in this film retrospective. The sixty selected short films, curated by Merlin Flügel and Marc Rühl will be shown in four blocks on two days from 6 p.m. until midnight. The entry fee for both days is twelve euros, with a concessionary fee of eight euros. These blocks will be followed by audience discussions with key figures from the world of animation discussing their productions.

The Saasfee Pavillon is the art and exhibition space for the artists’ collective of the same name. It is intended to be a platform for art, media, design, music and everything else in between. The collective has been in operation since the 1990s and organises its own exhibition projects with a view to supporting the art scene in Frankfurt and giving young designers the opportunity to display their work.

In addition to support provided by the Gogo Tanda collective, the animation film festival is also assisted by the City of Frankfurt Department for Culture and the Hessische Kulturstiftung.
