Type Drives Culture 2018
SVA Theater, New York
23 March 2018
Typography is everywhere: on our clothes, our smartphone screens and in public spaces in the form of posters, street signs, information screens, and various other forms of expression. The long-standing Type Directors Club summarises this development under the term of “culture” and proclaims that typography drives culture and culture drives typography. The organisers of the “Type Drives Culture” conference have invited designers and experts from around the world to illustrate the influence of typography on trade, music, fashion, politics, and publishing.
For example, the New York-based typographer Elizabeth Carey Smith will examine the typographical trends in the fashion industry from an historic perspective in her talk entitled “Type in Couture” and present current expressions. In addition to fashion, typography also plays a crucial role in music. Brian Roettinger is an American graphic designer and artist. In 1998, he set up his own music label “Hand Held Heart”, releasing albums by various artists and designing their album covers. Nowadays, Roettinger is known for designing album covers for musicians such as Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, and Duran Duran. His presentation “Looking at Music” will reflect the influence of typography on the music industry. The political aspect of typography is looked at in the presentation “Woman (Designer) on the Verge” given by Emily Oberman. Furthermore, the American graphic designer Milton Glaser who is one of the people responsible for the iconic “I heart NY” logo, will speak, as will the founder and presenter of the Design Matters podcast Debbie Millman, together with the typographer Matthew Carter in a live episode of the podcast.
Attendance at the conference costs 134 US dollars. Interested parties can also exclusively attend the “Design Matters Live” podcast for 65 US dollars. All tickets include a two-hour reception with the speakers at the end of the conference. Members of the Type Directors Club, and students, are entitled to discounted tickets.
