From February 10 to April 9, 2021, "Driving the Human" invites international designers, artists, scientists, and initiatives from various disciplines to collaboratively develop sustainable and collective future perspectives, thereby combining science, technology, and arts in a transdisciplinary and collaborative approach. The open call is aimed at applicants who critically engage with contemporary issues and develop alternative scenarios to our current situation:
- What constitutes humanity?
- What is its relationship to society and planet Earth?
- What could a collective future look like?
Project ideas can address a variety of topics, including the social impacts of climate change, energy cycles and our current technological acceleration, the balance between the biosphere and technosphere, the current processes of exchanging values and objects, or the effects of collective decisions.
"Driving the Human" welcomes all applications that encompass themes and discourses of urgency, radical openness, curiosity, interconnectedness, and new forms of collectivity. We also encourage applications that question prevailing narratives about the world and our role in it. In times of economic crises and pandemics, it is evident that humanity and its way of life on Earth are at risk. Fundamental questions on topics such as mass consumption, factory farming, and mass tourism must be re-negotiated.
Selected applicants will be invited to benefit from the expertise and multidisciplinary experience of "Driving the Human's" partner institutions: Acatech (German National Academy of Science and Engineering), Forecast Mentoring Platform, the State University of Design Karlsruhe (HfG) and the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.
