Design is re-design. Anyone who reads Miriam Irle's contribution on the Bouroullecs' Vegetal Chair will hardly hesitate to agree with this dictum. The design process took four years – and the Vitra chair, which we are exclusively presenting to you in this issue, has transformed in a truly striking way. Without a doubt, the result possesses great originality.

Markus Zehentbauer, in turn, examines the topic of re-design across various industries and observes enormous differences. In any case, a re-design process requires unexpected amounts of creativity and sensitivity, because it is not always about burning all bridges to a brand's past. Finally, Siegfried Gronert, professor at Bauhaus University Weimar, underlines the importance of design history for the present and future of design.
