Play encompasses numerous facets, from voluntary, (seemingly) aimless activity to serious competition. For children, it is essential for the development of cognitive and motor skills as well as social competence. But interest in playing does not diminish with age. Skill games, board games, computer games, as well as playing theater and music, and engaging in sports, shape our everyday lives. Pedagogy and healthcare also leverage "gamification," the integration of typical game elements into a non-game context, with the help of designers. And finally, the design discipline itself has borrowed a series of design methods from play – whether as a free experiment or with imposed rules.
This issue ushers in our anniversary year 2017, celebrating the founding of form magazine 60 years ago. In addition to a look back at our own history, the first issue of the year examines Bruno Latour's publication "Reset Modernity" and, as part of the Carte Blanche section, introduces the Italian food design studio Arabeschi di Latte.
