form 272 – Sample/Pattern
Graphic patterns are defined by their uniform structure and rhythm, whether geometric or organic, purely decorative or linked to traditions. Compiled in pattern books, they serve designers as inspiration, templates, or models, much like color and material samples. On the other hand, design, thought, and behavioral patterns are just as important for a designer's work as they are for understanding the world. In addition to the fictitious person John Doe, who represents the average citizen, and the show house as a visual object for houses of the same kind, we dedicate ourselves to patterns in all areas of life.
Furthermore, we examine the working methods of information designer Kim Albrecht, introduce the collective Foundland, based in Amsterdam and Cairo, and discuss new approaches and strategies in museum design based on the reorientation of the Biotopia Natural History Museum in Munich. In the Archive section, we continue the history of sustainability in design by looking at the experimental city of Arcosanti, and in the fourth part of our anniversary series "Revisiting the Past," we ask about the current significance of Europe for design and vice versa.
