The question of whether body and mind are two independent entities or, on the contrary, are inextricably linked, has occupied philosophy – at least in the European tradition – since antiquity. The concept of embodiment, which has been circulating in the sciences for a few years, assumes the latter, namely that our perception of the world largely depends on the physical experience of it – a thesis that is not insignificant for design. According to this, what is physically shaped also determines our feelings and thoughts. For this reason, in this issue, we examine what embodiment means for design – whether our body itself is modified, the products with which we interact, or disembodied AI are designed.
Furthermore, we interviewed Jan Wörner, Director General of ESA, about research projects of the European space agency and review the publication "Ordnung in der Gestaltung" by Ulysses Voelker, which is intended as a foundational work to introduce into (typo)graphic practice.
