form 295 – Belief
Because we love to tackle the really big topics, in form 295 we explore the connections between faith and design. Spoiler alert: Rihanna and the Pope have more in common than you might think.
Which aesthetic codes symbolize which faith? Who actually crochets the Pope's lace? How did the geometric patterns that adorn mosques (and not only mosques) come about? And what about faith in design? Why does everyone believe in Dieter Rams' ten commandments? And how do you make a book that documents an attack on a religious community? In form 295, we answer some of design's most burning questions of faith.
What do you believe in? An intimate and personal question that has been frequently – and often violently – negotiated throughout human history. We asked 12 designers* the Gretchenfrage, including Jasmin Müller-Stoy, William Fan, and Sarah Illenberger.
Photographer Boglárka Éva Zellei dedicates herself to the theatrical and quite extravagant scenography of baptism in her photo series "Furnishing the Sacred." Meanyoung Yang also takes us to heavenly heights with her visual essay. The director of the Bauhaus Archiv, Annemarie Jaeggi, answers three questions for us. We show seven sacred door handles, Paula Miéville advocates for female friendships and women's collectives. Markus Hieke takes a look at the material aluminum.
