form 270 – Südkorea / Land of Design South Korea
Since Seoul was named World Design Capital in 2010, South Korean design has gained increasing recognition on the international stage. In South Korea itself, however, design has played a significant role for much longer, as Yu-Nah Lee writes in her article "From Nowhere to Everywhere": "The emphatic government initiative to promote design dates back to the beginnings of industrial design in South Korea in the late 1950s." In addition to the country's design history, we were also interested in the mentality, identity, and work of South Korean designers, which we present in interviews, commentaries, and photo essays.
Furthermore, we delve into the history of sustainability in design, explore the role of design galleries, inquire about current developments in the textile sector, and offer a preview of the Euroshop trade fair in Düsseldorf. In the second part of our anniversary series, we ask about the current status of the functionalism debate.
