Anyone who has ever cleared out a household knows how many things a person can accumulate in their lifetime. Tirelessly, we carry small and large, significant and less significant objects into our homes, to extend the finitude of our existence a little further towards infinity. When photographer Ton Grote's mother died and his father was left alone in a large house, the latter began to empty room after room to create order. A need for documentation awoke in Grote. All discarded objects were organized, sorted, and photographed by him. The consistent, compact archive in book form lists 2,262 objects, mostly photographed in black and white. Staplers, lace doilies, teapots, letters: Here, a life is illustrated that the viewers did not know, but can now get to know through its objects. The book of objects itself becomes an object of a subjective collection - the nostalgic human cycle of things is closed. AR
