“There will always be a design emergency.” With these words, Alice Rawsthorn and Paola Antonelli presented their collaborative book at the Milan Furniture Fair in June. The publication is based on the Instagram platform of the same name, which focuses on interviews. In 2020, many designers worldwide contributed to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. Deeply impressed by the quick and thoughtful responses to the problems of our time, Rawsthorn and Antonelli initiated their conversation format. It is not just about describing the emergencies. Readers also gain insight into the diverse solutions from creative minds. In addition to three introductory essays by the authors, there are 25 interviews arranged into four sections: Technology, Society, Communication, and Environment. For example, Italian graphic designer Federica Fragapane started a project in 2020 with the US-based Surgo Foundation, where she translated abstract metrics into understandable graphics. She paints a picture of the United States, especially the areas most affected by Covid-19. Also featured are: the Italian duo Formafantasma on design activism, Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi with his floating houses, and US-Israeli designer Neri Oxman with her forward-thinking approaches in materials and processes. The book is very clearly and neatly designed by Studio Frith, allowing readers to peruse the inspiring interviews in black and white. Furthermore, its content encourages designers to take more responsibility for our planet. After all, "significant design is a human right," says architect Michael Murphy. ANNIE KUSCHEL
