Book of the Month December

The book Graphic Languages: A Visual Guide to the World’s Writing Systems examines the essential role of writing in society, because: writing, language, and culture are inextricably linked. Oliver Häusle, graphic designer and editor of the publication, presents 26 of the world's most widespread writing systems.

The scripts are first briefly introduced according to uniform parameters such as diacritics, orthography, and historical context. This classification allows for a quick overview and comparison between the writing systems. Häusle deliberately refrains from providing a complete visual overview. While a full representation would be beneficial for better understanding, it would exceed the scope, due to extensive logographies with thousands of characters, among other reasons. Therefore, for equal treatment, this omission is a comprehensible compromise. On the other hand, the comparative illustration of typefaces and font styles within the character systems is excellent. It is precisely this juxtaposition of different, non-Latin fonts that makes Graphic Languages a valuable addition to specialist literature on typography.

The design of the book is restrained: monochrome, understated, structured. Inform rather than impress! The different scripts are given appropriate space. The characters of the contributors fill the book pages in large format. Additional information about the designers and type foundries can be found in the extensive glossary. And for those who wish to delve further into this topic, the annotated bibliography simplifies entry.

With 448 pages, Graphic Languages is a comprehensive reference work that recognizes and presents typeface design outside of a Eurocentric context.
