Publisher form discontinues form Magazine

Today, June 22, 2023, the last form issue goes on sale. This special edition of form marks another turning point in the magazine's eventful history. It is an anniversary and double issue (300 and 301) and at the same time (for now) the last printed form. After this issue, the publisher will cease production of the printed magazine and dissolve the editorial team. The reasons for this are manifold: paper prices, changing advertising and reading habits, and the general economic situation make it very difficult to realistically and sustainably finance an independent and critical design medium.
This decision will certainly come as a surprise to many. form as a brand is in a better position than it has been for many years. That is why the publisher will remain.

The magazine form has existed since 1957. It was founded by Jupp Ernst, Willem Sandberg, Curt Schweicher, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld. form started as a broad cultural magazine that not only discussed and published art, architecture, and industrial design, but also ballet, music, poems, and design manifestos. Over the years, in addition to the founders, the editors-in-chief shaped the medium. First and foremost, Karl-Heinz Krug, who served for 36 years from 1962 to 1998. He was followed by Petra Schmidt (1999–2005), Gerrit Terstiege (2006–2012), Sophie Lovell (Executive Editor, 2012–2013), Stephan Ott (2012–2019), and Nina Sieverding together with Anton Rahlwes as co-editors-in-chief (since 2020).
66 years later, it is not the idealistic values that are leading to the discontinuation of the magazine – quite the opposite. Reporting critically on the design of our world is more important than ever. That is why this step is not easy for anyone involved.

In 2012, Peter Wesner acquired the rights to the magazine and the form publishing house. With passion, creativity, and his philanthropic spirit, he has shaped the magazine to this day. Without him, form would probably not have been published as a printed magazine more than a decade ago.

"It has been a great pleasure for me to publish this important medium for so long. I still believe in the relevance of design with attitude. As the publisher of form, I would like to thank all form readers for their loyalty. I would also like to expressly thank all former and current editors-in-chief of form who worked for me: Sophie Lovell, Stephan Ott, Nina Sieverding, and Anton Rahlwes. Also, all publishing employees for their many years of meaningful cooperation. I would also like to thank all contributors and advertising and cooperation partners who have worked with the magazine during my time as publisher." – Peter Wesner

Together with his wife, design and architecture expert Barbara Glasner, Peter Wesner continues to run the form publishing house based in Frankfurt and further develops it towards book publication with a focus on design, architecture, and corporate publishing.

"As the current co-editors-in-chief of form magazine, it is difficult for us to say goodbye to this venerable medium. form has not only strongly influenced our lives, but also those of many designers before us. Our belief in critical design journalism and our love for print media remain. We thank Peter Wesner for the trust placed in us, the humorous and open cooperation, and above all for the creative and editorial freedom and independence he has always enabled us as a publisher." – Nina Sieverding and Anton Rahlwes
